Roanoke bills itself as the “Only City with a Mountain Within Its Limits” so it makes sense to start the Seven Summits of Roanoke program by hiking up Mill Mountain. Mill Mountain is completely within the city limits of the Roanoke and is home to the Roanoke Star, Mill Mountain Zoo, and Mill Mountain Park.  A number of well-marked  hiking trails crisscross the mountain but, for this program the instructions point you  to take the Star Trail. Starting just off Riverland Drive, this 1.4 mile trail is a modest hike providing a couple of hours of nature in the city. You are rewarded with some spectacular views of the Valley from the viewing platform at the summit along with nice public restrooms, and of course – the Roanoke Star.
